What Is a Reefer Container?

Industrial-Grade Temperature Control in a Steel Container

A refrigerated container, a "reefer" in industry terms, is a standard shipping container with a refrigeration unit integrated into one end wall. It runs continuously or on a set schedule, circulating conditioned air through a raised aluminum T-floor so air can move beneath the stored goods.

Reefers were designed to carry perishable food by sea at a controlled temperature.

Reefers need a 460V 3-phase power connection. If your property does not have 3-phase, a diesel or natural gas generator can run the unit instead. Ask about power options when you request the quote.

Indiana Applications

Ways to Use a Reefer in Indiana

Support temperature-controlled holding at an Indianapolis catering or event location after confirming the loading schedule and available power.

Add temporary cold capacity to a Fort Wayne food operation, with temperature monitoring and a contingency plan for power loss.

Plan chilled ingredient storage for an Evansville seasonal operation based on the actual incoming product load.

Provide cold holding for an Indiana grower when the crop, target temperature and airflow needs match the unit being quoted.

Separate temperature-sensitive floral stock from ordinary dry supplies while checking the operating range required throughout the intended season.

Power Requirements

Running a Reefer Container in Indiana

Standard Power Connection

Reefer containers plug into a 460V 3-phase, 60Hz supply, the standard for commercial and industrial electrical systems. Commercial, agricultural and industrial properties may already have 3-phase power; confirm what is available at your site.

A qualified electrician can install an outlet at the reefer location. The refrigeration unit draws roughly 7 to 12 kW depending on the set temperature and the ambient conditions.

Generator Option

If the property has no 3-phase supply (for example a rural site, an off-grid location or a temporary event site), a diesel or natural gas generator rated for 3-phase output can run the unit. Generators can be rented from equipment rental companies.

Operating Through the Hot Season

When the ambient temperature climbs, the refrigeration unit works harder to hold its set point. Placing the reefer in shade or under a carport reduces compressor load and running costs through the hottest part of the year.
